She does not put her name on the episode. The recording is short. What she describes is not.

On More Than Just Luck, hosted by Greg Wier, a former Vista Maria resident talks about running from the Dearborn Heights facility, about restraint and neglect inside it, and about what the system did when it caught her. The published account calls the stay what it was sold as, a place of care and rehabilitation, and then names what she says it became: institutional abuse, extreme physical restraint, and severe neglect.

What was supposed to be a place of care and rehabilitation turned into a nightmare of institutional abuse, extreme physical restraint, and severe neglect.

She is one of the women who have come to Voices Unmuted without a last name on the record. The series is built for that. Greg Wier, author of the memoir More Than Just Luck, sits with former residents and lets the account stand in their words, including the decision to stay unnamed.

The episode does not dress the running up as rebellion for its own sake. In her telling, leaving was the response to a building that used restraint and then failed at basic care. Getting caught did not end the story. It handed her back to the same system.

Vista Maria has been described, across this series, as a juvenile facility for at-risk girls in Dearborn Heights. Former residents keep returning to the same gap: the mission on the sign and the treatment on the floor. This episode is one of the shorter ones. It still belongs with the longer ones, because the allegation is the same shape. Care was the promise. Restraint and neglect are what she says she got.

A civil lawsuit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court in April 2026 named six plaintiffs who say they were abused as minors while living at Vista Maria between 2000 and 2025. More than 100 former residents have come forward this year. More Than Just Luck has documented more than 25 stories of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse, unsafe conditions, and negligence at the facility.

She is not asking the listener to guess her name. She is asking them to hear what happened when a girl ran, and what happened when the system brought her back.
