Jessica on a diagnosis that did not fit

Jessica's story is about a diagnosis that did not fit, and abuse that did not stop because a chart said she was being treated.

On More Than Just Luck, she tells Greg Wier what it took to survive Vista Maria and the systems around it. She was sent to the Dearborn Heights facility and, the episode reports, was supposed to be placed in the standard residential wing. The hour is about the distance between that plan and the treatment she says she actually received. Misdiagnosis is the word she keeps, because a wrong label can authorize everything that follows it.

A file is not a neutral object in a youth facility. It decides the wing, the medication, and which staff believe you. Jessica's account is that the file was wrong, and that the abuse did not pause while adults debated the chart. She walks through both problems at once: a system that misread her, and a system that hurt her. Surviving one would have been enough work. She is describing both.

Greg Wier hosts the episode inside Voices Unmuted. He is the author of More Than Just Luck. The series has heard a lot of versions of the same institutional move, where care is the word on the door and control is the practice in the room. Jessica adds the medical file to that move. If the diagnosis is the excuse, then correcting the diagnosis is part of telling the truth.

A civil lawsuit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court in April 2026 named six plaintiffs who say they were abused as minors while living at Vista Maria between 2000 and 2025. More than 100 former residents have come forward this year. More Than Just Luck has documented more than 25 stories of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse, unsafe conditions, and negligence at the facility.

She is not asking the listener to pick between the misdiagnosis and the abuse. She is saying they arrived together, and that getting out required surviving the paperwork and the harm at the same time.

Hosted by Greg Wier, the author of "More Than Just Luck," a no-nonsense, real-life memoir about ambition, betrayal and triumph, this episode is part of "Voices Unmuted." The series keeps each account at full length because a short clip leaves out the part that matters: what the guest says the place was supposed to be, and what she says it was instead. Jessica on a diagnosis that did not fit is that account, written out so it can be read on its own.
