Nikki on the place that was sold as a refuge. Vista Maria was supposed to be where vulnerable girls were safe.
The More Than Just Luck episode, hosted by Greg Wier, starts from that promise. A facility where girls could leave horrific conditions at home, get guidance, and prepare for adulthood. Nikki describes punishments, control, and the adults who were meant to be the net. The episode also notes what women have alleged in other interviews in this series: that girls were forced to perform sexual acts while staff watched and gave instructions. That allegation is part of the published record of the investigation. Nikki's own hour is about the promise, and about the punishments and control she says replaced it.
Vista Maria was supposed to be a safe place.

A safe place is a high claim. It asks a girl to stop running. Nikki's account is what the claim looked like after she accepted it. The adults were the safety net. She describes them as the people administering the control. Preparation for adulthood, in that telling, meant learning the rules of a building, not learning how to leave one.
This is the first of her conversations with Greg. The second episode goes further into the help that did not come. Together they are a record of a resident who stayed on the microphone long enough to describe both the sales pitch and the failure. Greg Wier, author of More Than Just Luck, has used Voices Unmuted to keep those two things in the same frame.
A civil lawsuit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court in April 2026 named six plaintiffs who say they were abused as minors while living at Vista Maria between 2000 and 2025. More than 100 former residents have come forward this year. More Than Just Luck has documented more than 25 stories of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse, unsafe conditions, and negligence at the facility.
She was told the building was the escape from home. The episode is her description of the punishments waiting inside the escape.
Hosted by Greg Wier, the author of "More Than Just Luck," a no-nonsense, real-life memoir about ambition, betrayal and triumph, this episode is part of "Voices Unmuted." The series keeps each account at full length because a short clip leaves out the part that matters: what the guest says the place was supposed to be, and what she says it was instead. Nikki on the place that was supposed to be safe is that account, written out so it can be read on its own.
